Members of the Prince Albert Grand Council Search, Rescue and Recovery team (PAGC-SRR) helped other search crews this past weekend in finding a missing man from Mistawasis Nêhiyawak.
The PAGC-SRR, along with the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team (HEART), provided support to Saskatoon Police in finding Nathaniel Bear on Saturday. Bear went missing on the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon on February 27.
“Last Saturday, we received a call from the family and Chief Darryl Watson of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak for support from our Search, Rescue and Recovery team to help find their community member who went missing in the Saskatchewan River within the jurisdiction of the City of Saskatoon,” said Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte. “We are committed to helping families during their times of grief and loss, and we are fortunate we are able to offer these services to our communities.”
In February Saskatoon Police and the Saskatoon Fire Department started their search for Bear along the river. The operation included a boat, divers, and sonar. Officers assisted the search from the riverbank, but the search was temporarily suspended but resumed with help from the Saskatoon Police Air Support Unit, and Public Safety Search and Rescue.
On March 9th, PAGC-SRR and the HEART teams worked with the Saskatoon Fire Department to continue their search. After reviewing footage, they found what they called a promising anomaly and later searched that area on Saturday where they found Bear’s body.
“The dedication and professionalism of all those involved has allowed the family to now begin their grieving process and start their healing journey as a family,” said Chief Daryl Watson of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak in thanking the PAGC-SSR for contributing to the search efforts.
