Wade Gilbertson of Parkside practices the art of predicting weather by reading pig spleens after they’ve been butchered for market. I’m not sure of the particulars of how to read a pig spleen, but I know it has something to do with thickness and fattiness. Farmers having been using this method to predict the weather for over 100 years in Saskatchewan. He’s usually pretty accurate, and here’s what Wade predicted for this winter…
From the middle of November the weather will be very consistent with cold temperatures that will be below average. The snow will be very consistent as well. There is a huge amount of snow to fall in the first two months of winter.
There was no indication of any bumps of warm weather from the middle of November to the middle to end of January.
The next two months will be something we have not experienced in years.
The end of January is when we will start to see change with more average temperatures and no indication of snow.
The month of February will be average temperatures with some days above average temperatures. There was no indication of any snow, this will carry on into March.
March will start off average temperatures and little snow and will gradually change by the middle of the month. This will bring a significant amount of snow and colder than normal temperatures. This will carry on to the beginning of April.
As April moves on, we will slowly warm up with little moisture in the forecast.
If there is a silver lining to this winter’s forecast, it would be winter will be done at end of April with warm temperatures and will not carry on.
